When new leadership stepped into MPL Fabrications in 2020, the business stood at a critical juncture. With a respected name in Coventry and a loyal customer base, its legacy was clear – but its equipment and infrastructure were holding it back.
Managing Director Kevin Duffy brought decades of experience in the UK automotive sector and a readiness to act. He arrived with a clear strategy and the confidence to back it, personally committing significant capital to get the transformation underway. Since then, more than £150,000 has been invested in new machinery, including a £115,000 LVD press brake and a £50,000 CNC machine, part-funded by a £40,000 European Union grant. These upgrades have replaced outdated systems, increased efficiency, and enabled
the team to take on more complex, higher-value work.

Building on a Solid Foundation

Founded in 1980, MPL Fabrications has long specialised in precision sheet metal work and bespoke welded assemblies. Its services are delivered entirely in-house – from design and prototyping through to final assembly – giving the company full control over quality, lead times and customer service.
The investment programme has reached beyond the shop floor. The fleet has been modernised, internal spaces refurbished, and digital infrastructure overhauled. Improvements in marketing and CRM have sharpened commercial focus, resulting in a growing pipeline of enquiries from across the UK.
The team remains a key strength. Many employees have been with the business for decades, and succession planning is well underway to ensure that knowledge and loyalty are passed on to the next generation.

As 2025 comes to an end, it’s impossible not to feel proud of everything the MPL Fabrications team has accomplished this year. It has been a period defined by progress, new talent joining the business, new efficiencies across the factory floor, major sustainability milestones, a year of community sponsorships, and a diverse range of projects delivered to customers across the UK.

More than anything, 2025 has been a celebration of the people who make MPL what it is: skilled, committed, and passionate about doing the job properly. This year, our team proved once again why MPL Fabrications is trusted as one of the Midlands’ most reliable fabrication partners.

A welding team with over 75 years of combined experience

Our coded welders delivered outstanding work across stainless steel, aluminium, and mild steel projects, all while the UK faced a severe national skills shortage in welding.

The continued leadership of long-serving team members

Scott celebrated over 38 years with MPL this year, and Darren continued to expertly oversee the shop-floor with three decades of production experience behind him. Their knowledge ensures that new processes, new staff, and new technology all fit seamlessly into our workflow.

Welcoming new members into the MPL family

We welcomed Kerry-Ann, bringing valuable engineering experience from Bolyer Engineering who has strengthened our production capacity.
Her contribution has immediately, supported our ever-growing workload and adding fresh drive to the business.

Thanks to major machinery investments over the past two years, 2025 became one of our most productive years to date.

Our Bystronic press brake, LVD CNC punch machine and Morgan Rushworth guillotine have:

Increased our batching output dramatically
Produced tens of thousands of brackets in just days
Allowed us to handle urgent work with fast turnaround

The result is a quicker turnaround, increased capacity, and exceptional consistency. This allowed us to support more customers, including overspill work for other fabrication shops and manufacturers across Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond.

Our in-house delivery service continued to grow, allowing us to maintain quality control right up to the moment jobs reach the customer.

Improved storage and call-off reliability

Work began this year on expanding our secure storage for customer orders offering weather-tight storage for call-off stock for clients who need flexibility. This will be fully operational and up to capacity during 2026.

2025 was also a year where we deepened our community connections.

We became proud sponsors of Coventry Rugby player Aristot “Toti” Benz-Salomon, supporting a club that embodies ambition, teamwork, and local pride.

Coundon Court Ladies FC sponsorship

This year we were also proud to continue to sponsor the 3/4 zip training tops for Coundon Court Ladies FC, supporting one of the region’s strongest and most ambitious women’s football teams. It’s been fantastic to see our logo worn with pride throughout their season.

Supporting Myton Hospices

This year we donated £450 to fund the cost of a full hospice bed for a day. Supporting a local charity that delivers such vital care remains one of our proudest contributions.

🎓 Supporting schools and future talent

We continued engaging with schools, offering support at community events and helping spark early interest in engineering.
In a year where the UK faced severe skills shortages, inspiring the next generation has never mattered more.

Tree-planting programme thrives

Despite one of the driest summers in recent years, our newly planted trees are now flourishing, contributing to cleaner air and supporting biodiversity.

Free-to-use electric vehicle charging points

We installed two EV chargers for both staff and visitors to encourage sustainable travel and supporting customers and visitors arriving from across the country.

Energy-efficient factory heating

A brand new heating system, installed earlier this year, has significantly reduced energy usage and improved comfort for our team.

Responsible production practices

Across 2025 we continued investing in minimising waste, improving material efficiency, and streamlining processes to lower our carbon footprint.

As 2024 drew to a close, we were delighted to welcome Andrew Wakeham to the MPL Fabrications team! Andrew brings a wealth of expertise in MIG and TIG welding and extensive experience in the lift industry, making him a perfect fit for our growing business.

Andrew’s Background

Andrew’s journey in fabrication and welding began in 2008, when he embarked on a four-year college course to achieve his NVQ+VRQ Level 3 in Fabrication and Welding, mastering techniques across materials like mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, and even titanium. Since then, he has built an impressive career across multiple industries, including construction, steel erection, and refrigeration maintenance.

Over the years, Andrew has taken on various leadership roles, such as being a Team Leader managing a skilled workshop of five, overseeing fabrication, welding applications, and on-site steel erection projects. His self-employed experience further expanded his skills in site fitting and in-house fabrication, ensuring he’s comfortable taking on both technical challenges and managerial responsibilities.

In addition to his technical expertise, Andrew’s versatility and licenses, including forklift truck, scissor lift, and cherry picker certifications make him an asset to our team. His problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to handle complex projects align perfectly with MPL’s commitment to delivering excellence.

Andrew has already made an impact by contributing to our fabrication processes and ensuring projects are delivered with precision and efficiency. Whether it’s tackling specialised welding tasks or working on bespoke lift-related fabrications, his dedication and passion shine through.

MPL Fabrications Boosts Growth with Strategic Bodor I7 Investment

As we open 2026, MPL Fabrications, based in Coventry, is taking a huge leap that has been over a year in the making. This strategic investment has seen them broaden their capabilities beyond anything they have produced thus far, centred around their stalwart new laser: the Bodor I7.

The launch of this impressive machine was a true community event. Made In The Midlands was invited to attend alongside representatives from Coundon Court Ladies FC, Coventry Rugby FC, and Myton Hospice. These organisations are all supported by sponsorship from MPL Fabrications, highlighting a community-led operation that keeps local causes right at the heart of what they do.

A New Chapter for the Workforce

The arrival of the Bodor I7 sends a strong message of optimism and trust throughout the factory floor. The workforce can see in real-time the commitment their Managing Director, Kevin Duffy, is making not only to the company’s future but to the team itself.

By bringing laser cutting capabilities in-house, the firm is moving away from a reliance on external subcontractors. "It’s a natural progression," Kevin noted during the launch. "Instead of subbing work out, we are keeping it here. It eliminates the risk of being put back by someone else’s schedule and significantly cuts lead times."

Technical Capabilities and Growth

The investment, supported in part by a £20,000 local council grant, is expected to drive a 20% increase in revenue over the next 12 months, setting a trajectory to reach an annual turnover of £1.5 million. The move is also a win for local employment, with the new machinery creating at least one and a half new job roles.

From a technical standpoint, the Bodor I7 offers a cutting bed of 1.5m x 3m. While the machine is capable of cutting materials up to 25mm thick, MPL is initially focusing on high-efficiency output for:

Mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminium up to 8mm (pushing to 10mm for specific small-scale jobs).
Galvanised steel up to 3mm, ensuring safety and quality regarding exhaust fumes.

The current thickness limit of 8mm for large sheets is a logistical choice, ensuring the team can safely manage material weights with their existing lifting tackle.

Future Outlook

With the machine scheduled to be fully operational by next week, MPL Fabrications has already prepared a backlog of work to feed into the system. As they target nationwide delivery and ramp up their sales outreach, the message is clear: through the leadership of Kevin Duffy and the arrival of the Bodor I7, MPL Fabrications is now faster, more capable, and more committed to its Coventry roots than ever before. The UK welding sector is facing one of its most significant challenges in decades.
Recent figures published by Workplace Journal (August 2025) reveal a shortage of over 35,000 skilled welders; a gap that’s already impacting manufacturers, infrastructure projects, and the wider engineering supply chain.

This is more than just a workforce issue; it’s a challenge that cuts to the very core of the UK’s industrial capability. Welding is the backbone of British manufacturing, quietly underpinning everything from our railways and bridges to hospitals, defence systems, and clean energy facilities. At the start of 2026, we proudly introduced our Bodor I7 fibre laser cutting machine which is the fourth major machinery investment in just four years.

After months of planning, installation and preparation, the Bodor I7 is now fully operational at our Coventry facility. This investment represents a significant step forward for the business, our workforce, and the customers we support across the Midlands and the UK.

Previously, certain laser-cut components were produced using trusted external partners. While effective, this approach introduced additional lead times, increased transport requirements and reduced control over scheduling.

Up to 10mm for specific smaller-scale applications
Galvanised steel up to 3mm (managed safely and responsibly)

This donation is part of Myton’s vital “Gift of a Hospice Bed” initiative, helping provide essential end-of-life care to patients across Coventry and Warwickshire.
